"Boston, Massachusetts (BWBOS1)"
This aerial panoramic photograph of Boston was taken by James Blakeway. To the left of center is the downtown Boston financial district and to the right of center is the historic North End and the Old North Church with its white steeple. To the right of the North End is the Charles River with Cambridge, Massachusetts in the distance. Just left of the bridge spanning the Charles River is Boston’s Fleet Center, home to the Boston Celtics basketball team and the Boston Bruins hockey team. Centered in the distance is the area known as Back Bay. The American Revolution began in Boston in 1770, when British troops fired on an angry mob.
"Boston, Massachusetts (BWBOS4)"
This panoramic photograph of Boston was taken by James Blakeway. Most prominent in this image is the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, which crosses the Charles River. Behind the left bridge tower is the TD Banknorth Garden, home to the Boston Celtics basketball team and the Boston Bruins hockey team. Behind the right bridge tower is John Hancock Tower, the tallest building in Boston. Boston is rich with United States history; the American Revolution began here in 1770 when British troop fired on an angry mob, killing six citizens.
"Boston Light (BWBL1)"
This aerial panoramic photograph of Boston Light was taken by James Blakeway. Boston Light, North America’s first lighthouse, stands on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor. The Boston skyline can be seen in the distance. Originally a stone tower built in 1716 and maintained with a tax on shipping, it was blown up by the retreating British during the Revolutionary War. It was rebuilt at a height of seventy-five feet in 1783 and later was raised to eighty-nine feet in 1859. In 1989, Congress voted to keep this lighthouse manned. It remains the only lighthouse in the United States with a permanent keeper.
"Harvard Square (BWHS1)"
This aerial panoramic photograph of Harvard Square was taken by James Blakeway. Much of Harvard University’s Cambridge Campus is visible in this panorama. The large square building with the green roof, centered in the panorama, is Widener Library. Harvard Yard is located adjacent to Widener Library. The tall white steeple to the right of Widener Library is Memorial Church. At the far left, across the Charles River, is Harvard’s athletic facilities including Harvard Stadium. Left of the stadium is Harvard’s Business School. Harvard Square was originally the colonial village of Newtowne. Many of the streets first laid out in the 1630’s are still in use today.
